Wee Little Hippos

This Wee Little Hippo is about 3″ tall and worked in just two pieces: the head and body. This pattern hasn’t been tested so please let me know if you find any mistakes. Thank you. :)

Materials Needed:
WW Yarn
US “F” Crochet Hook
Polyfil, Stitch Marker, Yarn Needle

sc = Single Crochet
inc = 2 stitches in 1 stitch
sl st = slip stitch
blo = back loops only
dec = invisible decrease
fo =  fasten off
5 dbl popcorn = work 5 double crochet stitches into one stitch. take hook out of loop, insert it into the front of the first dc, grab loop and pull through dc.

Work in rounds without joining. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
Begin with a magic circle.

Head:
Rnd 1:  6 sc in a magic circle. (6)
Rnd 2:  (inc in next st, sl st in next 2 st) repeat around. (8)
Rnd 3:  (inc in next 2 st, sl st in next 2 st) repeat around. (12)
Rnd 4:  BLO, sc around. (12)
Rnd 5-6:  sc around. (12)
Rnd 7:  (dec, sc in next st) repeat around. (8)
Rnd 8:  sc around. (8)
Rnd 9:  Ear: (ch 3, sc in second chain from hook, sc in next chain st, sl st to original st), 1 sc in next st, sl st into next st, repeat ear, sc in next 6 st. (8)
Rnd 10:  sc around (go behind ears). (8) stuff head
Rnd 11:  (dec, sc in next 2 st) repeat around. (6)
fo using tail to sew up hole.

Body: (leave a long tail when you start to sew the head on with)
Rnd 1:  4 sc in a magic circle. (4)
Rnd 2:  inc in each st. (8)
Rnd 3:  sc around. (8)
Rnd 4:  (inc in next st, sc in next st) repeat around. (12)
Rnd 5:  (inc in next st, sc in next 2 st) repeat around. (16)
Rnd 6:  sc in next 2 st, 5 dbl popcorn in next st, sc in next 3 st, 5 dbl popcorn in next st, sc in next 9 st. (16)
Rnd 7:  (inc in next st, sc in next st) repeat around. (24)
Rnd 8: sc around. (24)
Rnd 9:  sc in next 5 st, 5 dbl popcorn in next st, sc in next 6 st, 5 dbl popcorn in next st, sc in next 11 st. (24)
Rnd 10:  (dec, sc in next 2 st) repeat around. (18)
Rnd 11:  (dec, sc in next st) repeat around. (12)
Rnd 12: dec around. (6)

Leave a long tail, using yarn needle, sew up hole then using tail bring it out the back of the hippo where you would want a tail. Using crochet hook, go into stitch next to where yarn tail comes through, slip st, (alternately, you can cut the yarn and refasten here with a slip stitch) Chain 3, fo and trim to length decide. Fuzz yarn end a little till you achieve desired tail look. Use yarn or embroidery thread to stitch on eyes and nostrils.
